Might be a WWII reference. The Arisaka rifle was so long compared to the Japanese soldiers of the time, that many of them who committed suicide had to do so by lying down, placing the muzzle against their forehead and pushing the trigger with their big toe.

Most oldie rifles were, and many hunting shotguns are. Also, predated in reference by Kipling.
