I absolutely loved it, one of the best I've ever seen. Too bad we won't see a sequel or some sort of spin off since it sold worse then dry paper towels.

If the rats looks like human, their struggle is almost like the typical RPG story where humans planned on a rebel against a certain group of other being claiming themselves as gods and ruled upon the world. What lacked of it is probably more mid-boss characters to kill and the massacre (not good for image as "good guys").
It's not the matter of selling well, it's just that the anime covered the book from start to finish. There's nothing else to tell in this story, it doesn't need that.
