I was born in the 70s but watched re-runs of this in the TV when I was a kid in the early 80s and loved it. Fun thing is that the character first appeared during the 1930s in a form of Japanese public storytelling that used comic panels while a narrator told the tale. This art form was called Kamishibai.
The first Golden Bat had a green "musketeer-type" dress, but it had the metal golden skull and the trademark cape. It also was armed with a rapier instead of the staff. He had Superman-like powers.
