Hmm, one wonders why a civilization with access to assault rifles would retain body armor that is incapable of stopping said rifle's projectiles. Primitive hand-cannons are what led to the downfall of steel armor, and an assault rifle is extremely more accurate and powerful. Still makes for an interesting picture.

You don't need armor that stops your own weapons, just armor that stops the enemy's weapons. Perhaps he's fighting people who are using more primitive weapons.
