I never got the point of making giant mechs that just hold oversized versions of an assault rifle. Probably why I like the battletech style of mechs more, or the 40k Titans. Those mothers pack some REAL punch.

I've always felt the opposite. Assault/battle rifles are the most effective all-around weapon we have these days, makes sense that it'd be the same if everything were just scaled up.

Well, given all the problems with flying tanks and bipedal mechs both, your probably better off with an advanced tread version.
Of course, its also possible that the mechs are actually controlled mostly through something modeled on (or outright using) a human brain. If that's the case, making the giant robot may actually be more effective, since it would be a form "familiar" to said computer. In other words, something ineffecient with a reaction time of ~1/2 a second would be better than something with a delayed reaction.
Realistically the closest we'd ever get is some kind of battlesuit, like an Elemental from Battletech. When you think about it, Mechs are stupidly impractical. We'll just keep getting better and better tanks, and as i said possibly armored suits, but that's pretty iffy.
Some reality check website figured that if you're inside a big mech you'd be turned to jelly because of how the torso would have to move to support all the momentum in the giant limbs.
