I personally found it quite interesting to see the current anime depict the world of BRS as one that reflects the emotions and relationships between each character through battle and struggle. Quite a unique and surreal take on things.

It's true for everybody else, but it seems that BRS dictates Mato's actions, instead of the other way around. Because BRS always comes to the rescue before Mato actually shows up and do something in real life.
"Dictates" is a strong word. I see it more as a correlation than a cause and effect. My theory would be that there is a special synchronicity between BRS and Mato's actions and experiences, but not one of control... more like the difference between a moving object above water and the reflection that can be seen small fractions of a second later.
