I wonder who gave her that blade? There aren't many touhou characters around during her sacrifice, and Yukari certainly wouldn't have done it.

Well I assume you know Youmu, the half ghost gardener and guardian of Yuyuko. She being half ghost means she has a lifespan either of a human or a youkai. In other words she will die and leave Yuyuko. This pic is of either at the death or Yuyuko remembering Youmu.

Regarding Yuyuko, definitely read Two by this side, two by the other side (alias Touhou Tonari). It's probably the most awesome shit you can find about her and takes a nice and unusual story drift with a much more personal and touching approach to Yukari. I can probably dig up the links somewhere, the whole thing is kinda hard to find.

So this is before she becomes the Queen of the Dead, when sealing the cursed Cherry Tree Saigyou Ayakashi, still sad, you will see alot of work around this.
The hair always throws me I have it in my head that she gets the pink hair after her death, there is no base for that just something I remember.

Now that I think about it makes me remember post #554749

I still dont believe Youmu will ever leave Yuyuko. When Yuyuko dies, Yuyuko is just gonna pull some Yama Strings and ka-ching! Youmu gets an immortal body just like Yuyuko.

I believe that her profile stats she had darker colored hair when she was alive.

No,looking at the tags that says "saigyouji yuyuko (living)", this could be when Yuyuko is about to kill herself,driven by the fact that she has the ability to bring death to mortals.You can read Yuyuko's profiles in Touhou Wiki.
