With a 32-bit OS, you can only use 3 and some fraction gigabytes of RAM. That's why 64-bit is important.

I can confirm from my own experience: my old computer was 32 bit, so I essentially wasted half my RAM with 4 gigabytes. Now I have a 64 bit system, and have 8 GB RAM, from four 2 GB sticks of RAM.
