I, on the other hand, blame Futaba. They made it a meme, and IOSYS just went with the flow.

I have harsher feelings toward the original artist (Nitta Jun), on the other hand. Mostly due to bad art and worse stories.

No you haven't. Your weapon choice has no bearing on your route. For the hard route you need the Booster 2.0 to get through Final Cave Hidden, which means not letting Prof. Booster die. Only then does the tow rope spawn, allowing you to do the rest.
