Thumbs don't really get used much in typing though except hitting the space bar; That can be compensated for by tapping it with the palm. Thumbs aren't exactly the most crucial digits for programmers.

That's not saying that isn't painful and brutal and a pretty awful fate nevertheless. Good luck picking anything up without thumbs.
