It caught on as a meme on Futaba, and has inspired a great many parodies and repetitions. The Touhou version just gets more publicity because of association with an IOSYS song and flash animation.

Are they refering to the glitch in yume nikki that allows you to move superfast on a chair or something?

I remember reading about this event on the Yume Nikki chan. Tried it myself and it made the hair on my body stand up, tensed me up.

I should really explore more Yume Nikki sometime.
