Tag discussion outfit

Posted under General

Due to a corrected definition of dress via forum #62862, the tag outfit came to my attention.

This was a pre-existing tag with no definition which I updated with the dictionary definition as well I added an example.

The purpose of the update of the outfit tag was due to the wikipedia based definition for dress.

A dress (also frock, gown) is a garment consisting of a skirt with an attached bodice (or a matching bodice giving the effect of a one-piece garment).

The part of the definition between the round brackets is very close to the definition of outfit (in function).

There has been some discussion on the tag already within forum #62862 generally considering outfit potentially too vague.

Note: Currently not all the images within are necessarily representative of outfit. I assumed their would be a discussion on the tag and I wanted to wait to go through them.

Well the wiki definition still seems pretty generic. "A set of usually matching or harmonious garments and accessories worn together": don't people usually wear things that match or look good together? It seems like it'd be more efficient to tag when clothes don't match or go together.

Honestly it's how specific we get. We could specify the tag more and say matching_outfit and broaden the definition to "same colour and style" or somewhere along those lines.

More or less it is just giving a name to situations where something would have in a past been called a dress but it is more then one piece.

As regards the problem with outfit: based on the earlier definition of dress, could a two-piece_garment tag be introduced? Or something similar?

This was mentioned in forum #62862 and is another option.

It sounds like you want an "almost a dress" tag. Is outfit really the right term for that? As a tag, outfit pretty much just says "someone in the picture is wearing clothes." Even matching_outfit would include most uniforms.

A lot of dresses are parts of outfits; if a dress has petticoats and a matching hat and matching shoes that would definitely fit "A set of usually matching or harmonious garments and accessories worn together."

Not at all.

Again it is just to give a label to matching clothing that was incorrectly under the dress tag. Outfit was what came to mind.

Yup it would.

As I say it was just to give a label to something like in post #901857. Beyond that it is a take it or leave it tag.

The tagging of the pieces individual is enough, there is also the fashion and casual tag. Pretty much, every character upload is wearing an outfit of sorts. Just correct the images that are tagged as dresses to skirt. There is the tag long_skirt that can be used, so I still see no reason for outfit tag.

Don't misunderstand. I am simply looking at the tag (as a concept) and seeing if it is worth keeping or if it is far to generic.

Basically do people think there is a potential need for a tag for "matching clothes"?

More or less it seems to be no but the concept was still worth discussing since the tag was there already.

If anything, I would like to have a tag for sets of clothing that have (seemingly) been sewn from the same material in the same style in order to match. A good number of Touhou characters sport such garments.

Alegria's proposal, skirt_set, sounds very good. Any other views on that?

A tag for this sounds fine - whether skirt_set or something else. But definitely not "outfit", that's just too ambiguous.

I see... Yet I would keep the definition too strict rather than too loose. Otherwise we will soon end up tagging according to our respective tastes than simply "what we see".

Can you perhaps come up with a looser definition that is as accurate as the one I proposed?
