tag implication blimp -> airship

Posted under General

The whole airship tag is a mess imo. We shouldn't be lumping real life airships with fictional "airships." Real life airships are all lighter than air vessels that utilize gases for lift, while fictional airships use some sort of anti-grav or levitation device to stay afloat. For the most part real life ones look nothing like fictional sci-fi or fantasy flying ships.

As for distinguishing between the various types of real life airships, I had previously proposed that we lump all of them under the blimp tag. Visually there isn't much difference, likely to the extent that there would not be a reliable method of distinguishing between various types (rigid, semi-rigid, and rigid) for tagging purposes. People would at least immediately recognize the general idea when using the term "blimp," even if it isn't exactly accurate.

tl;dr: The airship tag needs to be cleaned up. Lighter than air style airships need to have their own separate tag from the fictional levitating/anti-grav airships. Various real life airships types need to be lumped under one tag, as visually there isn't much to distinguish between them.

I think it's usually easy enough to tell a non-rigid blimp from a rigid zeppelin: just follow the lines of the craft's profile. If they are highly curved, it's probably a blimp, if they are linear (parallel) and ribbed, it's probably a zeppelin. Zeppelins also tend to be much larger; blimps are smaller and more common.

I'd be against aliasing zeppelinblimp since there actually is a visual distinction there.

+1 for dirigible; it's probably a better term than "blimp" for the purpose. It's a catchall for all sorts of real-life airships and leaves "airship" free for the sci-fi/fantasy kind.

I went ahead and tagged them / created the wiki.

Reading the airship and dirigible wikis suggests that a lot of things falls between them such as post #667198 that is neither a traditional dirigible or a flying boat.

Edit: Found the aircraft tag, that will do.

Also while there are occasions where taging both is called for such as post #672759 and post #12871 it is not something we should encourage in the wiki.
