Star tag

Posted under General

There could be cases of a single star shining in the sky though, that's not really a "starry sky."

If we are going to separate the two, I think it'd be bad to have the implication. What if you actually wanted to search for stars in the sky, but you wanted to search specifically for those that use those with star shaped objects instead of dots/points of light? If we're going for separation, imo it should be full separation.

Right now I'm doing a separation.

The only thing I can think up for Renim's case example (such as post #269435) is making the star tag for actual stars on the sky, whether it's starry or not (and then having the implication). Tag star_shape for the symbol.

I don't know if it's worth it, but star_shape is at least clearer and people will not misunderstand the tag use.

Updated

I would be in favor of star for the shape, and call the other one star_(sky), just because the former is way more common.

But I don't think it's really needed in the first place, given that combining with sky / night_sky is usually enough to tell between the two, with false positives easily spotted from the thumbnails.
Just as the crescent_moon tag works for both Patchouli's ornament and the actual moon depending on the moon tag's presence (with full_moon being undertagged I reckon).

From what I see, star+sky search give at least 1/3 posts that are only referred to ★ (~180/600).

And they are different things, which means should have been tagged separately from the beginning.

Updated

We never decided what to do with the crescent_moon tag, we decided how to tag the symbol and the object to keep them distinct but there was no decision on what to do with that particular tag so it's not a very good justification for/against anything.

Log > I remember. I think it works well enough as it's now though, as opposed to, say, frog and hair_ornament, to give a significantly worse example.

True, and I'm clearly not against doing this, yet since they actually wear the same name the current state doesn't seem wrong to me either.

Err, I should have said night. But I'd probably have addressed this by populating night_sky first anyway.

star/stars sounds good, but applying a plural to sky stars isn't the sort of thing that's without exception. post #269435 for example would be pretty odd to tag with "stars" even though that would be the proper tag in this case.

I'd rather use a third tag for this case I guess, like bright_star. It's visually distinct from a starry sky yet not always obvious from the thumbnails.

For what it's worth, star / star_(sky) sounds like a good separation. If we have a particularly abstract-looking star symbol in the sky acting as a real star and a symbolic star then we can just use both tags when needed.
