Discussing desired results of a tag intersection

Posted under General

We talk about searching a lot, but it usually seems to be a "what if" scenario related to a specific tag. In this case, I'm going to instead point out a case where we could easily encapsulate a concept in two tags and propose that it be the expected result.

In this case, I think post #663390 and post #663058 exemplify alternate_costume swimsuit. It's not something that's untaggable (for example, vestigial_costume), but I expect that this would meet with resistance because, though that's not the current reality, these things "should" be able to be found with those two tags.

So instead, I was wondering if we could at least get a consensus that in cases where the swimsuit bears obvious relation to a character's usual garb alternate_costume should be added as well.

In case anyone has others, do please bring them up.

Your idea sounds fine, though I do question some of the definition, stemming more from how alternate_costume is defined and used. I'm thinking of how alternate_costume is used for both a completely different outfit and an outfit that still is patterned or styled based on the original outfit. With how the tag is used both are alternative costumes, but one is nothing like the original while the other is a modification of the original. To me it seems there should be something to further divide these two concepts.

Hmm, I'm not sure I agree. Is there a case where you want to find one or the other but not both? I think usually alternate_costume will be employed in addition to something else rather than on its own.

Also, eww. I had forgotten that the wiki definition still retained the second part about unlockable costumes. Should probably just kill that bit. It obfuscates what is a pretty simple concept.

alternate_costume is never going to be as widely-used as it could be, though, because it depends on knowledge of the character's usual outfits for tagging.

I don't know that there's anything that can be done about that fact, I'm just pointing it out. This is probably part of the reason why a lot of stuff that should be listed under it isn't.

Oh, I'm not arguing that. All I'm trying to establish is "What do we think should happen in the event of a specific query?". If we can manage that, we have a concrete goal to strive for and a way to formalize our semantic grammar as well as the system allows us.
