Tag redundancy

Posted under General

This mostly applies to either continuations in a series or a genre. The two most noteworthy series that I've seen this affect are Gundam and Nanoha. I noticed that there are a lot of redundancy in tags. For instance, something like Gundam SEED would be tagged copy:gundam_seed for the series and copy:gundam for the genre of Gundam. Lots of Nanoha StrikerS images are tagged with mahou_shoujo_lyrical_nanoha and mahou_shoujo_lyrical_nanoha_strikers. I'm just wondering if this redundancy is absolutely neccessary, as it makes browsing difficult for someone who is searching solely for images from the original Gundam or Nanoha series, as all of the newer series tags will be consolidated under its tag. I'm sure that there are more series that are affected other than the ones I've noted here, but I can't recall any off the top of my head. I've only noticed these recently because I browse for StrikerS and Gundam 00 pics on a regular basis, and would like to know if this practice should be continued or not.

Because it's set up through an implication, the system does it automatically. You only need to tag with the series that you are uploading for (gundam_00 or mahou_shoujo_lyrical_nanoha_strikers,) the system will put the root series on for you.

There's nothing to stop you from searching for "nanoha -strikers" if the original series is all you want. OTOH, not having those implications would mean searching for just "nanoha" would not include strikers, which is not right.

Ah, I did not know that it was done automatically. Good to know.

That is something that I had not considered. I suppose if someone wanted to search for just the original Nanoha stuff, they could put in "mahou_shoujo_lyrical_nanoha -a's -strikers", but it would be much more difficult for something like gundam.

Why not tag images related to the first Gundam anime as "mobile_suit_gundam".

I don't remember seeing that particular tag around when I was checking out the taglists, but I will keep an eye out for it and use it as needed, but I have very few original Gundam images to post.

When I found it, it had 2 images so I did some sweep of the "gundam" tag and applied it as necessary.

It's a lot easier to just search the tag you want, and use the '-' next to the names of the tags you don't.

And I strongly support keeping these implications and suggest more as time goes on. It's very useful to have the umbrella tag that joins them together.
