Danbooru

Why is Furry banned?

Posted under General

Because it generally falls under the toon section and is usually poorly_drawn , both violating the uploading rules.

And finally, it is simply not what the majority of the danbooru community wants this site to be flooded with, because it would greatly compromise the quality of this site in both posts and userbase.

The difference is just that most of the picture compiled from Japan are actually made to sell stuff and much fan works from the same people that are presently busy with an art career. There's going to be an obvious difference in quality.

Alice said it right, though I don't agree with the bottom part sine "the majority" don't usually call the shots about which pic stays or leaves. If you find a good enough furry pic that isn't poorly drawn or toon then maybe it'll pass but don't expect it.

Yes but if we were truly following the TOS guildlines then they're shouldn't be any visible furry art at all. Maybe it should read as No poorly drawn, low quality furry art are allowed on Danbooru or something similar.

What's poorly drawn and low quality is subjective though, and not even the mods and janitors can agree 100% on this.

I think the rule is there simply to prevent people from flooding the place with furry crap, much like how the howto:upload page mentions that you shouldn't upload guro even though guro isn't against the ToS and there's quite a lot of it on Danbooru.

Actually, both guro and furry are against the ToS. See http://danbooru.donmai.us/static/terms_of_service

FeKa got it right; there are various reasons why those two in particular are disallowed, but it comes down to personal preference. Both bans are spottily enforced, and I tend to think that they're both rather silly (and I'm still a little bitter over getting temp-banned for posting depth_bomb), but Danbooru is a benevolent dictatorship, not a democracy.

I don't think so. I know that "guro" comes from "grotesque" (the word used in the ToS) but only extreme cases are explicitly prohibited, and not guro in general.

Then again, all guro is extreme for some people, so I guess it depends on the person...

wow. holy crap. that was quite a compilation of responses. got the picture. I took a look at that fur booru. mostly terrible stuff there with a few golden nuggets strewn about. Anyways, Thanks for the clarification.

Every time I run into a "moar furries" vs. "no furries" war, my first thoughts are, "What the heck, 'Omaha' is a masterpiece among comics. Why make a big deal of whether the characters look like animals, humans, toons, anime characters or whatever? It just works as is."

Then I check out some average furry stuff floating about on the web, and somehow get the idea why that kind of art is not in high regard...

Personally I think just strongly discouraging furry posts would be better than outright banning them. If nothing else, at least post #466766 is an addition that fits the spirit of Danbooru as I know it.

The problem is is that the Sturgeon's number of Furry Art is quite possibly the highest of all the subgenres that could be represented on this site. And much of it is just appallingly bad.

It is also overwhelmingly produced by non-Japanese artists (who by and large are not on topic here anyway) so by essentially banning it outright, we just avoid a huge amount of drama. Now, there will be exceptions (post #466766 was a good example) and we do not explicitly ban anthropomorphic images, which Furry is a subset of.
