Danbooru

Screwed by contributors?

Posted under General

Apologies in advance for the attention whoring moment.

So, my latest post is pending deletion. Not complaining about that, I'm not really fond of this artist's artworks in the first place. Still, this one is nice, and I figured out it was missing on danbooru among the rest of the artist's works. Good material + older stuff already on there -> green lights.

Turns out to my surprise that no approvers like it, so I checked the previous posts (kagi -flash) to find what went wrong with this one, and it happens that they were all posted by contributors. D:
Looks like I shot myself in the foot.

So, that "contributors are auto-approved but can't approve other posts" owned me. Fine, shit happens.

My question regarding this is: do I have any way to avoid this counting in my deleted posts? I was aiming for zero all the way with only unquestionable stuff and I messed up already at my 3rd upload. Fuck.

That's not a deletion appeal. It's bad then let it unapproved.
I'm asking if there's another way here.

Of course, on the other hand thanks to this I learnt to be extra careful with contributor content.

It's not really a contest to try to get zero deletions. Stuff happens outside of your control, such as an artist requesting stuff removed from the site, like tepengu. Anyways, many contributors went through the same deletion process like you are dealing with, so we have a fair idea of what will get approved anyways.

The solution is to not worry about it.

I agree. My best suggestion is to relax. I know it's not what you're looking for. I know it won't get you the nice clean zero you were hoping for, but it'll serve you better in the long run. In the end, there's nothing wrong with getting a post deleted. You won't be thought less of because of it. So long as you keep submitting quality, it won't affect your upload limit much (if at all) either. What it will do, however, is prevent you from worrying that each upload might become your first deletion. Let the deletion purchase you some peace of mind. I haven't seen anyone with zero deletions. I don't think anyone has none. Congratulations. This was your bar (or bat) mitzvah. You are now a man (or woman.)

Bah if make 10 good posts for every 4 borderline or bad posts nobody's going to care, including your upload limit. As long as you have less than 50 or so at 400 nobody's going to care especially if they were in the distant past or something out of your control.

I'm happy to see this discussed. As a beginner, it is easy to get the (hopefully wrong) feeling that four deleted posts is almost as bad as one negative record. (Do the maths, it's a good beginning towards getting a dead user account.) I bet you see it differently when your upload limit has passed one hundred.

Don't worry about it. I got a lot of deleted posts, but I still got positive records for my other uploads. It doesn't hurt your reputation that much.

When I started posting at first, I was mistaken about what the purpose of Danbooru really was.

I focused more on uploading artists while adding new entries where I could, even if the material was average, even to the point where I began uploading unrelated DB content(even after receiving contributo status).

General trick is that you just need to upload things you genuinely like, instead of focusing on filling artists. Danbooru's purpose is high quality artwork. So if you are really unsure about the art getting approved, leave it or ask around beforehand.

As everyone's pretty much been saying, just don't worry about it, and upload what you think is quality art.

My piece of advice would be to double-check an image before you upload it, and make sure you really actually like it and think it's relevant to Danbooru. I've made the mistake of uploading something, and then realizing there's some kind of flaw in it, or that maybe uploading it in the first place was a bad idea. Just try not to be too hasty when uploading something (I have a severe weakness for anything really that's really cute and/or has animal_ears; most of my deleted posts were things I uploaded in haste because of this.)

It would also be a very good idea to use the Danbooru image search service before uploading, too, if you haven't heard of it yet. If I had known about it when I first started uploading, I could've avoided quite a few deleted posts.

In any case, still, it's not really a big deal at all, and nobody really minds (unless you consistently upload really bad art. All the time.) But I'll have to say that it does take quite a bit of lurking and experience to get the proper "feel" for what would be good, quality content on Danbooru, so making mistakes in your uploading career is OK. Though, that is not to say you've made any yet, as I'm just speaking in general.

Every time I see this thread's title I keep thinking that you meant you got screwed over with Contributors constantly beating you to the punch when posting pictures. This might come off as off-topic but it also happens to everyone who post on Danbooru and you shouldn't worry about it....too much. Bapabooiee's advice are really helpful if you want to continue posting and making your way onto Contributor level. I do have some more advices to help you out but I'm not sure I'm the right guy for it. Just remember what everyone said here and you'll do great.

I saw a positive record a while back that said "Thousands of uploads, nothing deleted." I checked it out, and hot damn. This user actually had zero deleted posts. I don't remember which user it was but I still think they cheated somehow.

Anyway, yeah, don't worry about it. And if it's only your third post ever, I don't think it even counts against your upload limit.

Yeah sorry about that. If figured out it could be misinterpreted but the original thread title was even more vague, and I was sort of expecting to raise a discussion on the awkward rights status for contributors, as it's the point of the issue.
Well, I know it's a tricky situation anyway. I should have known it was risky to rely on contributors posts to gauge what is acceptable given this.

That's part of why I made this thread actually. Some people appear to have managed that, so it seemed possible.

I don't have enough stuff to upload to care about the posting limit anyway.
It was more of a personal goal than anything else really. :[
My message appears to have sounded more harsh than I thought, from some replies. I'm taking it easy, sorry if it looked too much like a rant.

Aye. I actually do that already. I use the image search to retrieve artists for stuff I got from elsewhere (mostly /c/), checked for dups before my uploads (geez I even verified if it looked through deleted posts as well - and it does, piespy did a great job with that tool).
I look images carefully before saving, as the tiniest flaws end up ruining overall great pictures, at least for me.

There actually was another image in that gallery that I didn't upload, because I was really indecisive about it. The one I uploaded looked fine to me however, but not to the point to save it for me too. Might have been my mistake, but I highly doubt users save everything they upload anyway, though I agree that, if they did, the overall site's quality could only be better.

Yes you are my nemesis when it comes to colonel Aki. Oh look a new picture I should check to see... damn you Mr GT!!!! :P

Yeah well you're not alone on that. We all be a victim to the "beaten to the punch" effect and while it can get really annoying after awhile of getting that "Error post already exist" message every time you try to post we all have to man up and let it go...mind you though that sometimes it's not that easy to do so. BTW, I know you was joking around but I just wanted to express my feelings on it.

BTW, about Bap's advice you might want to take into consideration other active posters. Losing a post to someone because you actually took the time to look at picture(s) to check for flaws and dupes can be really annoying at times.

Haha, I know your pain! I uploaded a CG set by fuji shinobu since a vast amount of his work was already accepted (as well as it being quite good imo), a few of them made it to the "popular" page. Then the approvers got tired of the CG set (or the one that liked it went afk) and I got 2 deleted that were not much different than the accepted ones I had uploaded the previous day. I still have more from the CG set but don't want to acquire more deletions so I held back on uploading them XD

K done story telling

But yeah, in the end, some approvers afk weeks at a time and those that may have approved your image may not have been around to approve it at the moment

Oh, and if you're aiming for a (near) perfect upload record, you'd best not leave "untitled.jpg"s laying around your desktop, I had this accident already T_T
