"Different Styles" pool, question on a specific post

Posted under General

The post in question is post #472747, specifically regarding a difference in opinions on how to interpret the text in the final panel.

The exchanges have previously been in the form of changing the notes constantly, which may be disruptive to their overall purpose, so I figured I'd put it here for more opinions.

It centers around the word「いまどき(の)」, or "imadoki (no)" and varying interpretations. From the post's notes history:

Interpretation 1:

Today's popular drawing Style
"いまどきの" (今時の, imadoki no) is a very common term for "of nowadays". If it particularly means Yu Watase's Imadoki! (イマドキ!), it should be written in katakana.

-and-

Interpretation 2:

Imadoki! Style
Check the stylistic similarities of the art and the series in question in comparison to abekawa's normal style. Also, just because something is or isn't written a certain way (i.e., hiragana vs. katakana) doesn't necessarily mean anything when the art is the determining factor. Additionally, generically calling it "いまどきの" anything is way too unspecified and doesn't fit with the overall theme of these expression tablets.

======

Rather than having two people toss differing opinions back and forth and leaving huge blocks of text in the tags, I think it'd be more prudent to put it up for further review by more people and arrive at an agreement. What do you all think?

Updated

The only denotation I could find for imadoki was nowadays, and "pictures of" follows it, so it could really either mean "Style of the pictures of nowadays" or "Imadoki (manga) Style". Perhaps Imadoki!'s manga art style should be looked at and the latter interpertation accepted if we find the 6th panel to be the same or similar as Imadoki!'s manga art.

OP, if you wouldn't mind (or anyone else), could you fetch some official art from Imadoki!? (cba too lazy)

As a side note, this isn't really the correct place to examine this but I figured since it wasn't already up that I would pitch in

Updated

I skimmed through the first two chapters and visually it's your usual shoujou tripe. The real question is: Is it a direct reference to a scene in Imadoki!? it really seems like such a reference so if someone who's read it could weigh in that would tell us more definitively which way this would go.

As for being sort of inappropriate, meh, there's been worse uses of the forum.

Updated

BrassBird mentioned on the post itself that the artist commented in Pixiv about it, and judging from his remarks, it seems interpretation 1 would be correct.

I don't have a pixiv account so I can't tell, but if that is indeed the case, then this is no longer ambiguous and the problem is solved.

Pixiv comment: 橙は年がら年中可愛いので描くのに苦労します。 ■左上からZ順に見るとちょっとした漫画っぽくなっています。あとマサオさんごめん。似せらんないや。

Pixiv tags:

If that helps at all.

It does. Thanks.

Comments are still a bit ambiguous based on face value, so I'm afraid finding the final answer might be out of my league, as I don't frequent pixiv so I'm unfamiliar with its meme tags. It's going to need someone more in the know for this.

A quick search on masao tears yielded post #318280.

That's surprising. I've sometimes found the image description, tags, and comments to be helpful in clarifying references I don't get when translating, and I've also gathered context from surrounding strips in comics where the uploader only uploaded a single strip. As Soljashy says, it's not that hard to make one.

I never said it was a hassle.

I just said I don't have one.

EDIT: To clarify, I just never really needed one. This is actually the first time I've hit upon something pixiv related that I didn't get. I suppose I'll get around to signing up for one at some point, but I never did in the past because browsing pixiv never interested me all that much, as I usually spend more time on 2ch and other forums.

Hello, recklessfirex. Thank you for your message.

>perhaps you could provide more background info?

Masao is in Abekawa's favorite members list. that's only info I cound find about them.

From what I saw in the the viewers' comments and tags in pixiv, it seems some viewers considered that Abekawa tried to draw it in Masao's style. They made fun of Abekawa about it.

Maybe 橙マサオ (Chen Masao) is a pun of 千昌夫 (Sen Masao, the famous Japanese singer).
