Based purely on the sounds it's *possible* though I have no idea about anything FF related except VI so...
As for ppg I think we were shying away from using "the" unless we needed to but I don't recall ever coming to a consensus on it.
We seem to have quite a few tags using it but only 15 have 20+ posts. Not sure where I fall on PPG.

In a technical sense, "jitan" in Japanese and "gitan" in French are pronounced differently.
I would think it would bring about a bit of confusion though, were the name changed accordingly. I think most know of "Zidane" but not "Gitan".

"ジ" is the closest approximation to "ʒ" that japanese is capable of...
Since we'd be aliasing Zidane -> Gitan, Searching for "Zidane" would still bring about "Gitan"...

Honest to Hyne, it's as if the horse's mouth isn't even a "maybe" these days when validating things (not just here, but anywhere on the 'net). As for etymologies, Tidus's name is derived from tidaa, a word for "sun", and is pronounced as such in Japanese, but even there it's officially "Tidus".
"So, then, why would Freya be 'Freija'?" Well, tell me, in a game with no voice acting, how would the general English speaking populous be expected to say that "j" right? Hell, I'm just recently acclimating to "jajaja" being "hahaha" in the comments 'round this site!
The only noticeable difference between Freya and Freija is the second syllable... (With Freya its "RAY" like in "Reimu", whilst with Freija, its "RYE" like in "Ride")
Aside from that They both mean the same thing; the only difference being one is Germanic while the other Anglo-Saxon...(maybe... I could be using incorrect terms here...)
Aside from the fact that I think we should stick with the official English names (as marketed by the original creators etc), claiming that translators "mistook" the word for "gypsy" as a valid name without a source is dubious to say the least. The creators might very well have intended his name to actually be "Zidane".

Anglo-Saxons were a coalition of Germanic tribes, so this kind of distinction is meaningless. "Anglicised" would be more like it, as modern English has drifted considerably from its Germanic roots.
