Danbooru

Source as "Imageboard"

Posted under General

It does it automatically, IIRC.

Images on image boards get deleted fairly quickly, so a link to it is basically pointless anyway. Plus, most of the images are reposts from somewhere else, so it's not the original source.

They should probably be set to empty, so that you can at least search for all the posts that don't have any meaningful source. It's not like knowing they're from 4chan/2ch/an imageboard tells us anything anyway.

Danbooru is built to automatically convert urls from the major image boards to "Imageboard". This is done because those URLs expire quickly, and it indicates a valid reason for incomplete tagging, for example the reason the artist is omitted. It also prevents the artist detection script from getting confused and associating artists with the image boards URLs.

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation everyone. Regardless, the text "imageboard" is just about as helpful as a broken link. Perhaps the source field just should be blanked if an imageboard URL is entered.

"Imageboard" at least gives some indication of where it came from. Sure, it's as good as stating "dunno lol", but at least you're told that explicitly. It doesn't make sense to change that, except for special-casing it for the source handling logic in new uploads (ie. it should be treated as if it were empty and replaced with whatever source is listed by the upload).

That isn't very helpful though. It would be more convenient if it changed it to 2ch or 4chan depending on the url, so people looking for source would at least know where to poke around.

I don't think it would really be helpful to specify the specific imageboard, since threads die usually within a day. The notation is simply to say that the image was uploaded from a source other than one provided by the author.

Poking around is highly unlikely to turn up anything related unless done almost immediately after the image is posted. Being that images have lasted on Danbooru for over 4 years now, something that has such a short useful time-line is of extremely limited efficacy.

I very much agree with this. "Imageboard" is better than blank because you at least know it's just that and not, say, "someone was lazy and didn't include the source". No, it doesn't help you find it, and even if you did find it in time it's doubtful the *chan or whatever post would include the URL. But at least I have a sense that the uploader isn't just uploading from their HDD, or leaving source out intentionally (bad!)

And special-casing it so that a real source overwrites it is definitely a must, if it doesn't already. Anyone know for sure? It can't be too unusual for someone to crosspost something from 2chan that someone else attempts to upload from the artist's real site 30 minutes later.

That's not what I meant by poking around. Threads in imageboards do die within a day, but users stay for months or even years, so taking these pics and posting them in the imageboard they were first found might help with finding the source (provided one has lurked in there enough to know how to ask, of course ;) There are some artists that only post on imageboards too, or post stuff on imageboards that they don't post in their gallery pages (like Jeff used to do in 4chan's /d/ and ko-chan) making it impossible to find all of their stuff unless you get someone in that specific imageboard to repost them.

It might not be as easy as finding artists and searching for tags on Danbooru, but I've been a *channer for years and I've been able to find lots of stuff that way.
