Making-of vs Unfinsihed AKA seperating things that were never finished from unfinished child posts with a finished parent

Posted under General

There was some confusion in the discord as to whether child posts of the sketch with the finished artwork as the parent should be tagged with "making of" or "unfinished", because of the (mistaken) belief that the "unfinished" tag was only for things where the finished version was never uploaded and others pointing out that the "making of" tag was only for things showing multiple parts of the process in one post. Only for for @HeeroWingZero who wrote the wikis to point out that such "single stage" child posts should be tagged "unfinished".

Progress gif/timelapse/etc: post #7495367, post #7463546, post #7333031
Still image showing multiple stages: post #7263671, post #7444526, post #7350406
Still image showing single stage with finished version as parent: post #7443994, post #7431519, post #7491160
Finished version unavailable: post #7443835, post #6902668

Personally I think we should have a way to filter for or filter out works that were never finished at all as people looking at progress pics to study the progress and how different techniques turn out might very well want to filter out sketches that were just never finished and I also think it could work in cases where people wonder "why tf is only the sketch uploaded".

I kind of like the idea of a never finished tag, but one problem I could see happening is when nobody just bothered to upload a final version, my bet is that that happens quite a lot.

Except other people told you this too, you just ignored it.

That's already mentioned in the "others pointing out" bit. I only worded it like that because it was a bit of a run on sentence and because generally "and then so and so said and then I said" makes it sound personal rather than a tag discussion.

You can search for unfinished posts with no parent.

That was my initial thought too, but it only works if all "progress" posts follow the rule of being in parents. I was initially thinking something like "complete version in parent" but it doesn't account for cases like this post #7487594. I understand the logic of wanting to see a visible progress in that tag but I still think "single stage" child posts should have some sort of name, especially as it relates to the "making of available" tag.

Perhaps lumping all three (collages, gifs, single stage) under the "making of" tag and having an implication seperate them could work. Or just tag collages.

Unfinished is primarly a filtering tag for people who only want complete art, in my opinion not tagging in-progress art as unfinished is silly. It is unfinished in this stage even if it will be completed in another post

I don't hate never_finished but I think it'd be hard to maintain given sometimes artists clean up sketches from months prior. It would be a neat tag to browse, so again I don't hate it.

I'll admit I hadn't thought of "unfinished -/+ is:child" (as opposed to whatever is going on in post #748594). Perhaps we could make the two tags independent of each-other and not necessarily mutually exclusive. "Unfinished" referring to the finished product not being in the post and "making-of" referring to it actually being finished. This also works with the "making-of_available" tag in regards to "single stage" child posts.

In that way:

Making-of -unfinished = Collages and progress gifs post #7495367, post #7444526. (What the making of tag initially was)
Making-of unfinished = single stage child posts post #7443994, post #7431519, post #7491160.
-making-of unfinished = Sketches and other "never finished" posts post #7443835, post #6902668.
making-of OR unfinished = Any unfinished posts post #7443835, post #6902668.

But I think that is counterintuitive too.

It's impossible to know for sure if a post has a finished version available or not unless you already know it exists, and "unfinished" is already a subject of debate (how many of the posts under sketch count as unfinished?). Having a tag like this is a recipe for disaster.
