Umineko spoilers in wiki

Posted under General

The wiki pages for several characters in umineko_no_naku_koro_ni (such as ushiromiya_ange, eva_beatrice) have character descriptions mentioning details from Episode 4. Since I haven't read it yet, that means I can't look at the post page or the wiki to delete it. Could someone get rid of them?

One of them is under spoiler tags, but I don't think the wiki should have character descriptions at all; they're also on some K-ON! characters, although there's nothing to spoil there.

I think a very brief character description is extremely useful. Something like:

kirisame_marisa: Blonde, yellow-eyed witch from Touhou universe. For more info see http://touhou.wikia.com/wiki/Marisa_Kirisame

This helps if you're not sure what character you're uploading. Also, if you are looking at a picture with an interesting character, clicking on the tag will give you a very brief idea of where that character is coming from.

On the other hand, long descriptions (anything more than 3 or 4 lines) are clunky and in my opinion fairly pointless.

EDIT: And yeah, no (unmarked) spoilers. Preferably no spoilers at all, but I imagine it's hard to avoid sometimes.

If we don't approve of alias/implications for spoilers, it should be the same for the wiki.

I'm of the opinion that wiki pages for characters should be restricted to information to help identify them visually, if you really care about the history, place in a series, real identity or whatever of a character you can check one of the thousands of sites dedicated to that kind of stuff, but this is probably a matter for it's own thread.

Yeah, I've been wondering about these over-long wiki entries for a while - I thought it was established that "danbooru isn't wikipedia" and anything longer than a sentance or two for accurate tagging purposes or "look here for more information" was excess and generally discouraged.

Currently there's damn near half a page long descriptions /synopsis' about K-on and some other tags that really are totally uncessary and outside the scope of the site IMO. They're also kind of annoying when viewed inline while browsing since they push the end of page about twice below where it'd usually end due to the inane length. Hopefully it would be OK to trim the excess fat away from these?

There should be no spoilers in wikis at all.

Even spoiler tagged.

Ever.

In fact the only legitimate use for a character wiki I can see is to describe their physical features somewhat to help with identification. And even that should be kept spoiler free. Danbooru doesn't need to get into summarizing plots and a character's story.

(Basically I agree with Log, as is often the case.)

There is some spoiler info that is really impossible to avoid though. For example, the actually gender for some characters is in itself a spoiler, which is not something that is easy to hide on a site like this. It's hard to cover up depictions of an androgynous "male" all of a sudden being flooded with artwork depicting them as "female."... especially when people will go back and tag all the original images as reverse trap.

Instead of cutting out all spoiler info in that case, I'd rather there be at least some minor info in the wiki explaining that the character was disguising their gender or something.

I do agree though that unnecessary spoiler information should be avoided.

In pictures, spoilers for that may be unavoidable. There's no need to mention it in the wiki, however. Or to even make a wiki for most characters.

Char wiki pages should be something like "Jane Doe is a character from Anime X. She's the one with green hair and always carries a sword. A popular meme called Foo consists of Jane Doe saying 'Dou itashimashite'." No spoilers like "Jane Doe marries John Smith at the end of season 2, then she dies."

That would always be a great thing to include. Even a character entry as simple as "Kotobuki Tsumugi (琴吹 紬). Character from K-ON!" would be a splendid wiki entry in my eyes.

Alright, after recently getting spoiled here by accidentally mousing over spoilers in one of the umineko wiki entries, would someone who is following the VNs mind culling the wikis down to visual information.

I would do it but even purging the entries would spoil more than I wish to know.

I just thought I'd be cool and purge it, and spoiled myself.

Honestly that person should be fucking shot.

We should make this a clearly defined rule that the wiki should be visual information, japanese name. I know I haven't done this myself, but it seemed like we reached a pretty good consensus with this thread and it should be made official.
