Danbooru's Unfortunate Anti Hot Linking Strategy

Posted under General

I just wanted to make mention that I don't think Danbooru is on the right track with the anti hot linking image that showcases rather disgusting images looped over and over. I think there are many other ways to notify viewers on say a message board that somebody has hotlinked from Danbooru without permission. If there is person who has not done anything wrong and is just browsing, they should not have to be subjected to such filth. Why not just an image that says somebody has hotlinked and to report them. I say this because I have just witnessed this myself on Animesuki, and an old image I had hotlinked to Danbooru by mistake (I was unaware of proper etiquette) was replaced with one of these Goatsex images and I was embarassed to receive a warning about it from the mods. So I ask if the adminstrators can reconsider not for my sake, but for the 1000's of people who may have had to view that image.

In the first place, you shouldn't be hot-linking to a site that doesn't specifically permit it as it's considered stealing bandwidth. Sometimes, shock is needed to get their point across as some doesn't get it even when given a friendly warning.

What if I mentioned the moderators on Animesuki told me they aren't enjoying having to clean up these images and it is really causing them a lot of problems. It's not about the people that are hot linking the images, but the other 1000's of poster that come through image threads each day and who have to suffer by viewing the grotesque imagery because somebody else decided to try and usurp bandwidth from Danbooru.

That was probably from the old image servers. Basically, all the files on Danbooru were hosted on donated (usually Dreamhost) servers. After Danbooru dissolved, those image servers were free to do whatever they wanted with the archives, including redirecting traffic to goatse.

It's generally not courteous to hotlink to images, especially on a high traffic site like AnimeSuki. This isn't just Danbooru, you'll find similar rules on nearly every other forum or messageboard on the internet. The whole ordeal you went through is precisely the reason why you should upload images to photo-sharing sites first.

But you're probably going to ignore me and hotlink images anyway. There are no protective measures on any of the images on the AWS server, and I won't make any attempt to block or redirect unless someone is pulling several gigabytes a day. I would ask you provide a link to the site so I can try and recoup some money through ad revenue, and to provide a service to people looking for similar images.

At least they're motivated to remove the hot links. Some forums don't even care or do it only when they feel like it. It's like you sold something you stole and have it blow on their face then go blame the person you stole the thing from.

Okay, but like I said, this isn't about me it's about the forum as a whole. I understand the mistake I made and I haven't hotlinked anything in ages since I learned the impact it has (been almost 2 years since this image I posted ad forgot about). Now, if it isn't this Danbooru that is responsible for the Goatse, then can anyone tell me who is? I hope to ensure that these explicit images don't appear on Animesuki for the boardgoers as a wholes sake.

Find out the server the image was hosted on. Find out the email address of the guy who owns the server (probably as easy as removing the danbooru subdomain) and ask him to change the goatse into something a little less offensive.

Linking or using [img] tags or whatever it may be is considered hotlinking because the image will be displayed whenever the page is loaded using the servers bandwidth. Just posting a link to the page is hyperlinking which makes the internet go round.
