Mass-edit: bang vs. finger_gun

Both bang and finger_gun refer to the act of extending the index finger and thumb, forming the hand in the shape of a gun. Which tag should we go with? I'm hesitant to suggest an alias, since some people might confuse bang with bangs.

Ugh. I like bang, and I hate the fact that anyone with tag-editing powers exists who is retarded enough to confuse bang with bangs. But such a person probably exists. So our solution is either to ban all such people or to change the tag... I suppose the choice is clear.

Huh. I thought the bang tag was for pictures that had the word "BANG" in them. Like post #435973.

If it means the same as finger_gun, it should be aliased to that.

There's a reason for your confusion - that is that the action of making a gun with your finger and saying "bang" is a semi-common trope in anime and manga, hence the name of the tag. (probably most famously seen when spike spiegel ................. dies in cowboy bebop.)

But I don't think all finger guns qualify as bangs - for example, post #449874 is a "real" gun, in that it fires projectiles; post #447068 is just... uh...?; post #168163, post #466092, etc.

So bang is a more distinctive gesture than just "making a gun shape with your hand". At least, that's how I see it.

I've always identified that gesture as a finger_gun instead of just bang. But instead of a mass edit, I want to see which of the two would be more identifiable between us, and have one alias to the preferred tag.

If a mass edit is really necessary, +1 for finger_gun.

I think at this point I'd prefer implicating bang to finger gun but keeping the tags separate. Rationale detailed above.

For now, doing what 0xC has noted. bang implicated to finger_gun, the latter being the main tag for the hand gesture.

Not sure how many bang posts there actually are, though. And what would be the criteria? Does the image have to explicitly say "bang" as in post #435973?

Not adverse to aliasing to finger_gun if we can't get a good visual definition for bang.

I'd say "someone pointing their finger_gun in such a way as to suggest, playfully, that they are shooting someone else, usually the viewer". Don't know if that's objective enough, though.

I'd say finger_gun makes more sense objectively than bang, but things like the bottom right of post #461337 seem to beg for it (although that one doesn't actually have either tag at the moment).
