Question about deletion requests for duplicate images

Also it's typically not kosher to flag something for deletion simply because it's a duplicate (especially if it is older than the better version), unless the pic is of egregiously poor quality (massive artifacts, watermarks, thumbnail-sized, etc).

Yes, bottom line is to ignore dupes.

If it hasn't been approved yet, we'll probably let it die in the queue, but if it's already approved we don't go deleting it unless it breaks some rule.

I'm seeing some images uploaded by albert (from the original artist's site) being flagged as duplicates, and it seems these have been hidden by a lot of mods and janitors in the queue. One example is post #605408. I uploaded the larger version from Pixiv at one point, and now I noticed someone flagged the child and it's in the mod queue. Has the official policy on flagging dupes changed over the months? Should these kind of images be approved if they're in the mod queue? I'm a little confused on this.

I noticed this too when I was a Test Janitor. At first I was sure that duplicates weren't supposed to be flagged. But I saw that the duplicates were often hidden very quickly in the mod queue so I became less sure.

As far as I'm aware this policy was never changed. I mentioned as much yesterday in a comment to post #74549. In a lot of these cases though, I've been hiding them anyway just because they aren't things I would have approved in the first place. (In that one's case the watermark makes it delete-worthy)

I've considered just approving everything that is flagged because it's a dupe but honestly I don't care enough to reapprove them.

Policy hasn't changed. If you know it's a dupe of the sort you mentioned, approve it. Also went through and reapproved a bunch of albert's images that had been sent back as dupes and deleted.

Ok, got it. post #608416 was another I noticed like that, so I went ahead and approved it. Legitimately sourced lower-res duplicates should stay.

Any easy way of letting users know not to flag duplicates? Think it's been repeated around the forums a few times, but maybe not easily seen, and don't know if it's in the wiki help section (skimmed through and didn't see anything about "Unapprove").

I used to patrol people flagging older dupes against policy pretty vigorously, PMing them to let them know, but I haven't in quite some time now. Perhaps we should do that.

I had it as a sticky in the forums for, I dunno, probably a year but, as a rule, nobody reads stickies.

Maybe get albert to add a note to the dialog box that asks "Why should this post be reconsidered for moderation?"

What about you make a link/disclaimer that you have to read before flagging a post?
