Tag Discussion: solo

Posted under General

Before I start, I have looked over both forum #17622 and forum #14830. The only reason I am making another thread regarding solo is because after the past discussions, a solid decision hasn't been made -- that is, the action to keep or delete.

On one hand, the solo tag can be useful for anyone looking to make an order:score search for posts with an individual character, for example. Using it, they could easily omit posts that feature that character grouped with others, as results in an order:score search would commonly bring up without use of such a tag.

On the other hand (as Shinjidude pointed out in forum #14834), the biggest problem with this tag are the daunting amount of posts it would have to be applied to. That alone can be attributed to the fact that solo is just not a well-known tag at all. And how could we raise overall user awareness for it?

As it stands, I can see one useful application for solo, and have tagged uploads where it fits accordingly. But if it's finally decided among us that the tag isn't worth the trouble, I'll have no objections.

I would like to keep it. There are people who want a specific character, but overall. Everyone seems to be fine just searching for pictures pagebypage.

I was thinking about going through popular series and tagging 'solo' to pictures, when needed.

>_> okay, I admit. Ritsu was my motivation.

I say keep it. The more it's used, the more people know about it and tag other images with it.

As for trying to tag all the applicable images with it, the bigger problem are the images that have very few tags (if any at all) to begin with. You may not be able to get all of them without significant work, but every little bit helps.

I didn't know about this tag until today, but I'll start tagging it from now on.

Edit: I just thought of a couple of questions.

Does it still apply to images with multiple people, but only one recognized character (e.g. post #445575)? Also, how does it apply to Youmu/Myon or Alice/Shanghai?

Updated

Oh please keep it. Page by page of /ff... 'twas daunting.

Q: I didn't apply it to solo-gal pics with pen0r in 'em, even if the 'peen was the only part of the other(s) visible. I also wavered on whether a large animal negated solo ("large" being bird or bigger). What oughta be the constraints of what's considered solo?

I can't imagine deleting the tag now that it has ~7000 posts to its credit. Well, possibly if *cough* that metatag idea had been accepted, but not as it stands.

And ones of different views on the assumably same model, such as post #12904?

I wouldn't put solo if each form has its own character tag, though they do look the same...

Well, assuming we decide to keep solo around, we can discuss this in detail too, taking tags like dual_persona and time_paradox into consideration.

And along the same lines, more likely than not ruling out solo for these.

I'd also be against wiping solo, but I think it's probably still infeasible to make it work except where people choose to add it. I'm of the opposite opinion of RaisingK regarding it's use, preferring it to be used for depictions of single instances of characters, rather than also using it for multiple instances of the same character. This especially makes sense for dual_persona posts where the personae interact.

Wait, doesn't that make us of the same opinion, then?

Since this is the discussion thread for the tag (albeit an old one), I'll just put this here:

Once the new charactertagcount metatag is working properly, shall we nuke the solo tag?

I'd say no. It's still useful for searching for images of only one original or untagged character.
There are also instances where an image may only depict one character but have multiple character tags, such as certain genderswaps and fusions.

I agree with Kayako. Also the original tag is a copyright tag, not a character tag. It'll never register anything on the character count search. So there will be tons of images that will likely fail to be found with a character tag count. That search really only benefits copyrights with named characters.

As for nuking the #girls tags, charactertagcount:2 != 2girls.

Updated

Here are some tags that are going to throw off the character count searches: shikinami_asuka_langley, konpaku_youmu, alice_margatroid (if you don't count her dolls as people), cosplay, fusion, if_they_mated, chimera, etc.

So definitely no to trying to nuke the solo tag.

charactertagcount:2 -male

You just love to ignore how male is defined, don't you? You're more likely to get male/female pairs than male/male pairs (which are the only ones that would receive the male tag).
