Meme question

Posted under General

I hope it's okay to talk about topics unrelated to the site. :)

I just noticed some Hatsune Miku images in the posts and remembered a question I've had for a long time.
What is the meaning of the leeks (aka green onion, negi) in Japanese meme?
I've seen OS-tans holding it, the polka girl spinning it, and now even Miku.

Someone kindly enlignten me, please.
Thnx

It's from the OS-tans. Specifically, ME-tan. From Wikipedia:

Additionally, when she is not frozen or out of control, she tends to do things showing a lack of common sense or knowledge, such as putting soda into a microwave oven or defending herself by swinging a scallion (This is a pun; a firewall program called "NEGiES" is pronounced like "Negi"(scallion) in Japanese.)

Thanks for the quick response
And thanks for the Miku pics, too :D

Haven't read/watched Negima, but I did think it was a strange name.
It seems to be really popular both in manga and anime versions.
Is it worth checking out?

Negima starts out with a lot of fanservice and some campy story but it gets a lot better and more serious with the plot archs. I heard the anime is trash compared to the manga which is how I am following the series.

Are we using leek or spring_onion? leek is a preexisting tag but if they're actually spring onions this can be easily enough patched and aliased.

I've aliased scallion to spring_onion.

Leeks and scallions are actually different (not that anyone cares). Negi translates to scallion, so I would prefer to use that. I can alias leek to spring_onion if desired.

If they're similar enough, I think pretty much everyone who knows the meme refers to them as leeks. First time I've seen it addressed as either spring onions or scallions.
