Pokemon Gym Leaders/Minor Characters/etc.

The minor characters in the Pokemon tag need aliases. There was another thread on this (forum #11730), but it managed to get derailed. I'm making a new one instead of digging that one back up.

We're already discussing one character in forum #14371, so we can leave that one there. This thread is for the more minor characters anyway, like the Gym Leaders.

A few of them keep getting flip-flopped between their English and Japanese names. We need to decide which language we will use, and alias accordingly. The main ones I can think of right now that need an alias are:

cynthina_(pokemon) or shirona_(pokemon)
maylene or sumomo_(pokemon)
candice_(pokemon) or suzuna_(pokemon)
cheryl_(pokemon) or momi_(pokemon)

There are probably a few more that I missed. It doesn't matter too much which direction we should go, we just need aliases.

I also want to say something about tagging the Pokemon themselves. Some Pokemon get tagged with their English names, while others get tagged with their Japanese. I believe we should stick with the English names, since the English names are more recognized, and no one wants to make almost 500 aliases. :P If you find any Pokemon tagged with the Japanese name, change it to the English one.

Pro japanese names - they are the original ones, and you simply cannot reason them away: Every country where pokemon is published has its OWN character names - thanks to 4kids and Nintendo. So why should the american names be more important? And why only for the minor characters?! Why shouldn't we apply this to the main characters?

About the pokemon monster tags... I'd suppose having one pokemon_(monster) tag and aliasing all Japanese and English names to this tag. That's I guess way enough.

re the pokemon:

Start with mass editing all the names and then once we figure out how many we have of each then make aliases for cases of pokemon with 30 or more, we don't get pokemon uploads so often that creating 500 aliases is a good idea.

characters themselves alias to japanese because that's the way the rest of them are.

Wasn't the issue of the pokemon themselves settled already, and in the "stick with English" direction? Simply because of the unusual nature of those "characters".

As for the human characters, aliasing to Japanese is probably best.

I believe so, but I don't think everyone has stuck to it. Then again, there's also a chance that the one's I saw were tagged like that before the issue was resolved.

Having the English Pokemon names is decent, since a good number of the Japanese names are just plain-text words, which may cause some problems in tagging that the more uniquely spelled English names don't generate (Thunder/Zapdos, for instance).

Also agree that the Japanese character names should be used, since those are decidedly NOT plain-text words, and the regular shift of names across territories (or even within on territory, as some of the GSC characters have endured, I think) kinda fits this into the go-with-their-originals sort of thing (as is in place for FF names, even though those aren't very Japanesey, hm...).

I need to get back to tagging post #355824 (which I hadn't spotted Cleffa in when checking the second-genners).
EDIT: Ah, done, with only Cleffa and Sharpedo unaccounted for (I looked hard for Sharpie, but I'm not about to waste as long as on Cleffa).
