Renaming basic human features tags

Posted under Tags

nonamethanks brought up something in forum #141842 that has been an issue for quite a while and that is the incorrect use of basic human feature tags like nose, ears and fingers. There are more of those, of course.

These tags are supposed to be used only when they are the focus of an image because tagging them on every post with humans (or other creatures) would make them completely useless. Yet they are constantly misused, usually by inexperienced taggers who follow the “tag what you see” maxim.

These should all be renamed to *_focus (like nose_focus) and the original tags should be made do-no-use tags. That will make them more intuitive, curb misuse and they’re easier to clean, too. They would go well with tags like solo_focus and male_focus (and the ridiculous but extremely fitting tank_focus). Bonus: I won’t be possible to use these generic tags as padding if we implement some kind of “Most Valuable Tagger/Updater/User”.

Incomplete list of relevant tags:

What else is missing from this list?

mouth and eyes are a bit weird because they’re used for different things: focus and unusual placement (and amount). That should be split up anyway, IMO.

Edit: Added tags mentioned by nonamethanks.

A strong +1 for this. Also, I'd still suggest pov_feet to be moved to foot_focus, as that's the current usage of that tag. Perhaps an alias in that case? Or just making that tag a disambiguation do not use, to (point to and) split into pov_legs (for when the viewer's legs are visible) and the mentioned foot_focus, which seems the vast majority of it.

Should legs be renamed to legs focus to keep consistency?

Also for mouth and eyes we already have extra eyes and extra mouth. Maybe we need a mouth in unusual place too, and eye equivalent, to help differentiate and make the concept more easily searchable?

Thighs and hips I think have more of a fetish connotation in this case, so I'd be for leaving them as they are right now. To be more clear, I can see someone searching for thighs or hips just because they want to see pics containing them, but I can't really see someone searching for eyes just because they want to see every picture on danbooru containing eyes.

Another one I just came upon: eyebrows. Not sure if we even need it as it's currently phrased because we have thick eyebrows and short eyebrows already.

I managed to remove the implications in topic #13025. The tag is completely useless from years of having bad implications.

It could be nuked and a new eyebrow_focus tag cultivated in it's place.

+1 except that I don't like the "focus" part of it. I don't have a suitable alternative word however. The concept works out so we can at least get this through and if someone comes up with a more descriptive name we can use that.

If the eyebrows one is done then "prominent_eyebrows" would be better than "eyebrow_focus" as that's a better description of what the tag is for. Images that focus on eyebrows are basically non-existant. I got rid of about a fifth of that tag's uses after the implications were removed, incidentally, although there were probably twice as many left that would have wanted removal. With the implications gone and various other tag gardening in the time since then I do think there are more images with the tag that want to keep it than those that don't by this point, so I'd rather have it transitioned over and then gardened to size rather than nuked and rebuilt from scratch.

Perhaps prominent_x would be better for some of the others than x_focus.

The only problem is that it puts the body part at the end, so people don't find it when searching. x_prominent would work, I suppose.

Seems the change is upon us (issue #3529) so we need to sort these tags out pretty soon. I think I'll start going through some of them in the next couple of days. I'll start with ears -> ear focus, so anyone else feel free to handle another one in the meanwhile.

I think handling them manually and gradually moving the posts to the new tags while at the same time simply detagging those who don't fit is a better approach than a mass update or an alias, because otherwise we'd simply end up having the noise move from one tag to the other. It'll also work better in the long term because it's easier to have a saved search with all of these generic tag and monitor it every once in a while than have clueless users dump irrelevant posts into the new tags because of autocompletion.

Before I start going through them however I'd like an admin's opinion on it, since it's a pretty serious change given the size of some of these tags.

@Hillside_Moose @NWF_Renim @Type-kun opinions? Also please consider approving this alias from pov_ass to ass_focus since it's one of the tags in question. This one is the exception to not aliasing because pov ass is already used exactly like ass focus would be.
