[REJECTED] Remove work_in_progress from Meta category

Posted under Tags

category work_in_progress -> general

Link to request

work_in_progress is not related to any technical properties of the image file, its source, or its status here on Danbooru. It describes an intrinsic property of the picture itself and therefore should be a General tag. Mentioned in topic #14678, along with a lot of other stuff, but this is the one I feel most strongly is in the wrong category right now.

And I will still say the same:
Can you tell apart a sketch from a work_in_progress post? All of nori_tamago sketches are wip posts and both are tagged with sketch and work_in_progress. But you can't know that by simply looking at an image and the meta category should also be used for, well, meta information, something you can't tell an image is by simply looking at it.

Then I'll say the same too, since noone answered in the other thread:

Whether or not you can tell something just by looking at the picture doesn't seem important in and of itself to me, but it's been mentioned several times in this thread. So can someone tell me, why does that matter? Not based on a theoretical definition of "meta", but why does making those tags stand out actually improve the experience of users on the site?

A meta tag should describe technical and information that don't fall under "tag what you see". You can't see whether a post is a wip or not, but you need further information.
I agree that you could ask why otoko no ko is then a gen ta, but also wip describes a technical status (is it finished or not) of a post.

I'd say it should clearly stay in the meta category since it seems to fit the definition of a meta tag.

That doesn't really answer my question. It's not about the definition of anything, it's about why it's actually useful.

I just thought of a reason why this tag in particular might be useful to have separate, though: It could accidentally be copied to the finished version when uploading as a parent (similar to things like jpeg artifacts). So that is something to consider.

The same could be said for almost any tag. For instance, most images in their early stages have simple white backgrounds. These also have to be removed for later revisions, but neither white nor simple background should be Meta tags.

Bump. Don't want to give the impression that I changed my mind. I still think this should be a General tag. It's a tag of general interest, not of maintenance interest, and it's not technical in any way, nor is it transient with respect to a single post.
