New Upload Observations

Posted under General

To begin, I think the new upload features are quite neat. However, I've hit what may be snag (debatable).

Before I mention the "snag" I do really like how although commentary is now auto-loaded it makes you check a box before it's actually added. This is such a good call since 75% (if not more) of artist's commentary adds absolutely nothing of value to the image in the case of Danbooru. Don't know how many times I've seen a commentary request on an image, looked at it, and went "You really don't want me to translate that..." Although, I expect the commentary request tag to increase dramatically. Personally I've been of the opinion that if you don't already have a partial understanding, don't add it. It's probably "meh" anyway.

So the bit of a snag I just ran into while modding today (with a bit of praise). The system now recognizes new artists and I must say on the post I ran into it did a good job. Saw a post I liked and approved, but then noticed that although the system recognized the artist's name as having duplicates and even added the pixiv user number at the end to differentiate it... it was a normal tag and not an artist tag. So I double checked for other sources and found nadda. So good call adding the pixiv number to differentiate, right on! Only problem was, it automatically added as a regular tag, not an artist tag. So I wound up having to go in and transfer it over to an artist tag and make the link myself.

Well yeah, I already try and help such when I encounter a "nice post... Hey, where is the artist tag?" situations when I can. Although I've personally never uploaded an image when I could not properly tag or translate an artist's name myself. My concern is we're going to encourage folks to upload regardless of whether they can add a new artist tag or not. Giving credit to original artists is a bit of a thing for me. Have met too many doujin artist's personally I guess.

Oh well, just have to watch and see. Perhaps a few extra artist tags gone half done is a far lessor of issues. Like I said, the fact the system compensated and added a pixiv number to the end was quite nice. I've had be creative on a few occasions with new artist names when only one source was available coincided with multiple duplicate names.

Oh, I was amused that a pixiv 女の子 tag automatically added the 1girl tag to an upload lol I can certainly see good things coming from this. Such as character tags.

These features (loading the commentary/translated tags/artist tag) have existed for quite a while. The only thing that has changed is that now these things are loaded automatically. Previously, if you didn't upload with the bookmarklet, you had to click the Fetch source data button and the Artist button manually to load these things, which not everyone knew about or bothered with.

Regarding incorrect artist tags, please list the actual post and the artist tag so we can see what went wrong.

No previous uploads by the artist. The upload function auto-generated the general tag xyz_(1327935). So I added the artist #159544 and problem solved.

I've tried to play with the bookmarklet before but never managed to get it to work (I'm not technically inclined so I'm sure was operator error on my part). Thus why I was a little surprised when I saw all the automatic features, but I can generally read the Japanese tags well enough that it never really mattered. I do like the features though. Think they will be helpful.
