New Tag: Ordinal? or Sequential? (a tag for post with parent or children post relationships)

Posted under General

I think this would be a very useful tag. It would be tagged to images that have some sort of sequential connection. A girl with her shirt on, next image is the same picture but the shirt is removed. I am not sure about the word ordinal... maybe sequential would be better?

What do you think?

I've been using sequential for images that are frame-by-frame animations and so on, and I think the kind of image you're thinking of would also fit into that mould. However, perhaps you'd like to stay specific, in which case ordinal would do the trick (though I have to say I don't know if I'd remember that tag, since it's not really a day-to-day word for me).

Can you give an example, wereoctopus? Do you mean separate images that have some connection, or a single image with multiple shots within it?

The former would be better parented/pooled than given a whole new tag that by itself wouldn't narrow things down very well. For the latter, sequential sounds fine.

I'd like to note here that CG dumps with minuscule differences between images, which would be the main candidates for the tag, are not encouraged. In fact, I usually cut those I find down to 1-2 images and delete the rest; we really have no need for more crappy, bland, mass-produced images.

I was thinking sequential would be more for two separate images that have a connection. For example a figure is in the relative same position between the two images, but there are significant differences in expression or clothing between the two. In one she is wearing something, in another something else, and then another she is nude. I am not sure if sequential or ordinal is the right word for the concept I am trying to convey.

Re: the way the tag is used now (by スラッシュ and others):

"Sequence" is shorter, and slightly less open to misinterpretation. The phrase "comics that aren't comics" comes to mind.

I started typing stuff about post relationships, but I think I'll save that for a new thread.

Re: legga Re: the way the tag is used now (by スラッシュ and others): Yes I agree for that way "Sequence" is better.

I just discovered that what I was talking about is actually covered by child posts and parent posts.

Clicking similar posts also can bring up such relationships. I was wondering if it would be useful to have a tag denoting that a particular post has children posts.. or parent posts.

It seems that child posts show they have a parent, but parent posts don't show they have children in the related post part. Would it make sense to tag such posts as:
pose_series
has_parent_post
has_child_post
has_similar_posts
similar_posts ??

Never mind... I see now that parents show they have children as well. I think tagging would be redundant, and not useful. I think I did not see the feature because I am pretty new to Danbooru and some images that should have the relationship don't. It does seem to take a few more steps to implement child/parent relationships.

Well... Sequence means something completely different to me, but if it's aliased, that's fine.

Anyway, now that I see what you mean, I don't think that's the same thing as sequence/sequential, so I don't think it should fall under the same tag. It's probably fine as a parent/child with no further tagging, though it might have some use to tag it since there are all kinds of things that use parent/child relationships already.

Though like 葉月 said, we don't really encourage uploads like that.

Not the same drawing, but the parenting/childing implies it's the next "step"in the proceedings. There might be other instaces in FF alone, but after tens of pages, I'm giving up the ghost.

Other suggestions:

  • Things that are similar (some FFVI stuff acts this way, with sprite-to-drawn and collage pics, along with the different FFT groups)
  • Things in a set with no particular order (3D Tifa Lockharts, perhaps?)

Tags don't work for this at all for the same reason that page number tags don't work, if you search for "sequential" with that sort of set of images you would end up getting a bunch of pics that may or may not be in sequence (depending on when they were posted) and almost certainly aren't related to one another.

Yes, this is precisely why I don't like the idea of using a tag. The tag in and of itself means nothing. It doesn't do anything to locate the other part and necessitates increased multi-tag searching to narrow down the choices, and adding tags to a search is something regular members have precious little ability to do.

If it's just one other image, then honestly it makes the most sense to just leave a comment. A two post pool is overkill. A parent is better, but not always appropriate, when both images stand on their own. I'd most likely leave a comment with a link to the other post.

LaC, please submit a trac ticket with your revamped pools idea from ages ago. As I recall, it was a good idea, and one I'd like to see implemented.

A problem with the current system is that we don't have anonymous pools, so people are loath to add, say, a sequence of three images with uncertain source to a pool.
