Help regarding artist name translations

Posted under General

I've been recently getting into uploading but I've run into an issue more experienced members of the community might be able to help me with.

I tend to browse pixiv by tag mostly and am not fluent in Japanese. So when I upload, the translations google gives me of the artist names are...hilariously wrong. Presently I try to find another picture the artist has on danbooru and use that tag, but it's a tedious process and doesn't always work.

So what do you guys use to get the correct artist names if you can't simply read it? There might not be one but I'd rather make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

For artists you aren't sure of use topic #8199. This does not need a thread of it's own, you can post artists you are not confident about there.

In general we don't translate names but romanize them. Suppose an artist was named ちなつ. Google Translate would tell us the name is "light," while really we should just grab the romanization which would be chinatsu. And be careful about the order of surnames. In general it would be a good idea to ask in that thread and to look back over several posts to see how similar questions have been resolved.

If you use the bookmarklet for Pixiv or put the image or post URL into the upload form, you can use the “Artist” button to have Danbooru effortlessly find the artist for you if we already have a tagged image of that artist. It doesn’t work if you save the image to your PC and upload from there, but you shouldn’t do that anyway because you might grab the wrong version.

There’s also HowTo:Pixiv with lots of information about uploading from Pixiv. There’s even more uploading information (also about other sites) on the general HowTo:Upload. The wealth of information might seem overwhelming, but there’s lots of tips and tricks there to make uploading easier for you.

I thought you meant for artist creation. For just posting kittey's advice is vital. If you run into artists without a tag, knowing how to create them will be needed and that thread is there for if you are not confident.
