Should be self-evident.

"Onomatopoeia" is the proper term for written sound effects.

Also it should be noted that the wiki description for sound_effects makes no sense - it's basically a oneliner taken from wikipedia that has no relation to how the tag is actually used on this site - or even to how it could be used. All of the pictures under that tag fit under the definition of onomatopoeia.

EDIT: The tag alias sound_effects -> onomatopoeia has been rejected by @Type-kun.

Contrary to the statement in the OP a lot of sound effects aren't onomatopeia, instead being "sound effects" for something that doesn't actually have a sound.

Onomatopeia is words that are based on emulation of the sound something makes.
Last I checked, staring at someone doesn't sound like "jii", for instance.

It does in japanese. They're called "擬態語" (gaitago, lit. "replicating through language"). "Jii", "gokkuri", "pika", all these words are onomatopoeiae under all but the most pedantic definitions of it.

There are a few categories of symbolic effects in japanese, depending on what kind of source is considered (living, nonliving, interior to self, exterior), and none quite falls under "sound effects" category either since there's even effects for the "sound" of silence or for the "sound" of someone thinking. For all intents and purposes on danbooru "onomatopoeia" is used in the exact same way and for the exact same cases as "sound effect", the only difference is that the first term is the more correct one.
