[REJECTED] Tag alias: stewardess -> flight_attendant

Posted under Tags

I see the problem. Though there's a very small amount of stewardess images on danbooru that isn't referring to the aircraft variety (Car attendant doesn't even have a tag), the rest shouldn't be disconsidered.

2 problems still remain:
- is there any way to distinguish them other than the setting of the image?
- there is still an overlap in tags between the 2 above that we should probably address.

Sorry for the terse reply earlier; I was on my lunch break and short on time. I'd meant to link to forum #100574 for the examples posted there.

Make no mistake, I would like nothing more than to minimize the use of gender-restricted tags we use here, but there simply isn't a good replacement in English for steward/stewardess that isn't limited to one particular mode of transportation, so the stewardess -> flight_attendant alias is out of the question. I can only think of a few practical options, the last of which is a bit extreme:

  • Maintain the status quo, tagging images with stewardess (if female or crossdressing) and flight attendant/train attendant/bus attendant wherever applicable.
  • If we're intent on eliminating overlapping tags, purge stewardess and leave its wiki as a disambiguation page that points to the tags for the specific occupations.
  • Take an axe to stewardess and the *_attendant tags and just alias everything to steward, treating it as gender-neutral. I can't see this being a very popular option, but I'm putting it on the table for completeness's sake.

As for how to distinguish between the different types of steward/stewardess, that's a tricky proposition because there's a lot of variability between different companies' uniforms. Blazers, gloves, and scarves/neckerchiefs seem like standard attire for all types. Peaked caps (post #877092) and bowler hats (post #1072884) seem to be common among train personnel, whereas flight attendants seem to gravitate toward garrison caps and wing-shaped lapel pins (post #1464059). But it's not always so obvious, and we don't have a good backup tag for cases that could go one way or the other.

Maybe "Cabin attendant" could work then?

Pretty much all the applicable areas for this role/position/job are, an enclosed mode of transportation.
It's a bit audacious to call trains and elevators "cabin" but, by definition

"an enclosed space for more or less temporary occupancy, as the living quarters in a trailer or the passenger space in a cable car"
"living accommodations for officers"

technically they should count.

Perhaps just simply use attendant for the tag. While the word is a bit more ambigious, given we haven't used it already I feel we're unlikely to be using it for anything else. Alternative usages of the word would most likely not visually standout well enough to warrant a tag or would be better covered with a different word for the tag name.

I would like to retain the stewardess tag for female attendant uniforms (which are all going to be rather similar, at least as far as depictions coming out of East Asia goes), but I suspect it's going to be highly unnecessary, since most likely all posts are going to be of people wearing female attendant uniforms anyway.

Want to revive this discussion, since i recently came across bus attendant as well.
Both on this site and in real life (their uniforms are pretty cute).
+ we've always had tour guide from the underworld who's character is basically just that.

I'm for @NWF Renim 's suggestion of using attendant generally.
I wouldn't mid keeping Stewardess actually, since it has a different tag on Pixiv and is the most popular term but, i think we'll just end up aliasing it to attendant.
All the other tags, would implicate attendant and would only be used when the attendee's job location is clear.
