What's the policy for uploading higher quality versions of existing pictures?

Posted under General

There are some pictures here rife with artifacts that I have found clean versions of. Should i just upload them or what? I wouldn't want my uploaded version to be deleted as a dupe or something.

Dupes are not normally deleted (see forum #3113), only when considered on their own they are low enough quality to warrant deletion. On the other hand, when there's a much better version, flagging the artifacted version for deletion would be good. (This transfers favorites to the parent now, doesn't it? Otherwise it should be left, I think.)

Though I don't know how the mods would feel about a flood of better versions. I'd upload a better version if the pic we have already is significantly worse (i.e. it's from aerisdies or otherwise has visible jpeg artefacts, lower resolution, poor scan quality, etc.), but not if the image is only marginally better (like uploading a png if we have a good quality jpeg).

But then I'm not a mod, so take that with a grain of salt.

Maybe you could post some examples of pics you're planning to upload good versions for.

Yes. Doing this is a good thing. Granted, if it's like 1 pixel bigger then it's probably a waste of time, so use common sense.

Edit: ::looks:: Although, those three particular images I never would have approved in the first place... but whatever, that's why I'm not the only one with approval powers.

Still, that means they're better quality. Better quality is *always* good, you don't have to ask about it. Also, higher res doesn't necessarily mean better quality, past certain pixel count it makes very little difference. However, less artifacts is a no brainer, always upload them if you have them.

That said, I (personally) do not believe in approving a post simply because it's another version of an already-approved post. Even a better version. If I never would have approved the original in the first place, I will not grandfather in the improved version.

So I wouldn't approve any version of those three images. However, that's just me.

Oh, of course. I worked on the implicit assumption that the content ain't crap, of course. I wouldn't have approved them either, but you already know my stance on porn. There are, however, people who approve porn, and the basic point that uploads of higher quality are never disadvantaged on the grounds they are dupes holds.
