What's the point of calling something deleted if the site is still hosting the image

Posted under General

Seriously? I could understand a few reasons for not actually deleting posts, but I don't understand why we'd be using a term that is certifiably incorrect. The posts aren't deleted, they're simply removed from searches without the term status:deleted. Wouldn't blocked or something similar be better?

I understand that, but it's basically the permanent recycle bin. I'm unaware of anything that's actually been completely deleted here. Is it just not possible with the site format?

There are purged items, but they're mostly reserved for very special situations.

post #6, post #37, and post #39 are some examples of completely purged posts, pulling from easy to find ones. It is certainly a rare thing, but there are reasons for that. The possibility tapnek named of things being appealed and undeleted is one. The fact that deleted images stay for the purposes of "find similar" for those who would try to upload an unapproved or deleted image again is another.

These are appreciated and valid points, but now I can't help wondering about the process of purging. Just how awful does something have to be to be purged? I'm aware of several examples of posts, mainly live action porn shots that have no conceivable reason to continue being hosted here. For that matter, if we delete a post from an artist that wishes for their work not to be displayed here, does this system not fly completely in the face of those wishes?

As Saduharta points those images may remain to help isolated banned images as the system can't do a comparison with something that's not there, and only certain users can see the deleted images from banned artists anyways. They're removed from public viewing, and short of having a system that can recognize uploads from banned artists without their images being in site (and the check for a banned artist can otherwise be bypassed if you upload the file directly instead of using the uploader bookmarklet)....
