Suggestion: Accesskey Shortcuts

Posted under General

I've been thinking, we have an accesskey keyboard shortcut set up for saving already (S), why don't we also have them for other site functions?

I think they would particularly useful for voting (a la stumbler). We could perhaps use (F) to toggle favorites, (+) for up and (-) for down. Edit would be another likely candidate (E). The menu could also be made hotkeyable maybe (1,2,3,4,5...)?

I don't know about anyone else, but I think hotkeys would make the interface much easier to work with, and implementation is as easy as adding a handful of HTML attributes. What do you guys think? Is this an idea worth posting on the Trac?

From the lack of input I'm guessing either no one else thinks this is a good idea, or it was buried before anyone who cared saw it. I thought I'd bump it just to give it one more chance before I let it die. Anyone else think hotkeys might be a decent idea?

Accesskeys act differently in different browsers, in IE it's alt+[key], in Firefox it's alt+shift+[key], I guess it's usually ctrl+[key] for Mac.

We've got one set up already for saving, which is "S", so alt+s, alt+shift+s, or ctrl+s (problematic sounding) all work depending on your browser to save a post you're editing. I think it'd be useful to have these set up for other functions as well.
