New replacement request thread: topic #16765

--------------

Making this thread since we'll probably need a place to organize where to request replacement posts given the way we now handle image samples. Let's get this warning out of the way first.

DO NOT REPLACE SAMPLES EXPLICITLY. LET A MODERATOR REPLACE THEM.

This thread is for primarily replacing image samples, and more specifically image samples whose full size images are typically no longer available (bad id, protected link, etc). If you have an image that is better than a post that is already legitimate to begin with (sourced from the artist's Twitter, Pixiv, deviantArt, Tumblr, etc) just upload it separately.

If the post you want to replace still has a live source, tag it replaceme instead so a moderator can replace it. Otherwise, post here.

The way this works is this. Post a post #, and a link to the full-size, like this:

https://68.media.tumblr.com/b578fc702ce0bd407cee71824e701e68/tumblr_nutqb3lzDO1uv6edpo1_raw.png

You can share multiple posts to replace in a single comment, but just keep this syntax the same.

Twitter md5 mismatches are fine, since we can't really check those for integrity quite just yet. You are also welcome to post them here if you are absolutely sure one is a sample of another, and it would be more preferable than if you replaced it altogether (since the post will still be live as we replace it, and it won't count against your record if it goes deleted).

One more thing: Confirmed image samples MUST come from the same source. Let's put that into example:

  • You can't claim that an inferior twitter post is an image sample of a superior post on pixiv that should be replaced; just upload the pixiv image, and parent the Twitter post. That goes for any other inferior -> superior source given both are from the artist, ex. Tumblr -> artist blog (post #2785414).
  • You also can't claim an image is a sample that should be replaced if it has no source provided and doesn't match an md5 anywhere on a given site (whether that be Twitter, Tumblr, Pixiv/seiga), but you can flag it for deletion once a superior post has been following how we treat unfairly modified posts (waifu2x, unsourced third-party conversions, etc).

If you want more information on how this works, see topic #14063. Also see topic #13646 for discussion on this project.

Ah, good, I've been waiting for a thread like this.

I already mentioned one of the following (#1) in topic #14081. There are a couple of posts from pool #7425 that need fixing. #1 had some issues with the left/right margins. #2 was saved as a JPG instead of a PNG. I reprocessed both PDFs again and uploaded them to catbox.moe.

Fixed...

Thanks to Mikaeri for doing that!

Hmm, think so? We can try that. Except I prefer the tag be shorter and more concise... how about, maybe replaceme? Much like how we have tagme.

EDIT: I think we would still need this thread in case a link isn't readily available but a user has one... But let's see.

EDIT 2: Created wiki for it.

Updated

Sure. I think he'll bump the other thread when he's done, but for now you can assume most of what is width:1280 or height:1920 from Tumblr is replaceable, in case you want things to get done quicker.

How about ones that already have superior parent? I have a certain post from Tumblr that got Tumblr sample'd, but it already got a Pixiv parent. Does the replacement still necessary?

Probably not? I asked this in topic #14154 on the third page. I think it may be best to have that tumblr post deleted and the faves moved to the Pixiv one if they have the same md5 or are qualitatively the same (dimensions, file size, pixel comparison). I asked in the other thread and got as much as this response: forum #132855

If the posts are exactly the same you can't replace anyway. You could say, replace the image of the later post with a less quality, then replace the original sampled image with the unsampled one and then replace that image of the later posted one with an image sample - but, this is much more time consuming and just serves to right a wrong that isn't much of a big deal in the end. I would say the juice ain't worth the squeeze.

In cases like these we just have to assume that we didn't know, the same way we treated twitter samples in the past without the function. Again, we don't have a routine job to clean up image samples or duplicates -- if we did, then this wouldn't be made up to be such a problem as it is right now because uploading duplicates or image samples will unfortunately destroy your upload ratio.

So we'll just have to take the deletions. I've offered a sort of 'solution' to maybe have the ability to move uploader names to some dummy account (so we can invalidate those deletions on their record), but I understand things might be complicated in that regard.

Well frankly any good mod or admin, which we have aplenty will recognize when deletions are because of samples. For promotions it shouldn't hurt anyone though it could put the breaks on upload ratios. For most contributor rank people this is just a benign blemish.

I think an easier fix would be to ignore flag deleted samples from ratios.

The problem with that is that anyone could artificially 'fix' their upload ratio if they tag their own deletions as image samples though. The tag isn't autotagged, and can be manually gardened by both bot scripts and users alike.

This shouldn't be the discussion where this is happening though, I think we should maybe move this over to topic #13646.

That is still prone to mistakes though. Plus, sometimes that flag reason is not always the one used (even if the image was flagged as a 'sample' by another word, could be a typo or the flagger just didn't know how to put it another way).
