I think the precise problem is that we haven't been given a lot of personality for Eve, because all we have is a demo. So there's not a lot to talk about her besides her looks. Most of the dissent I've seen centers around how bland she feels as a character just from what was presented in the demo and that the story feels awfully similar to Nier Automata though. Not a lot of criticism about her appearance unless it's in relation to the above criticisms or when it's on the topic of her body being realistic, which is an entirely different can of worms. Again it is a demo, so no one's opinion should really be set in stone or taken as gospel until the whole game releases.

It's not a subplot. Halfway into the campaign our main objective becomes ensuring a better life for the girls, and every action taken by the commander is towards that goal.

In one of the extras (Trying to find a link to it is very difficult) involving a magic mirror that swaps the characters genders (A Mirror World you could say...), female Shuro has a crush on Laios instead of Fallin so it might not be entirely unrequited...

Standing against injustice and genocide isn't some kind of transactional arrangement wherein queer folks expect Palestinians to support them in return. Shocking as it may seem, some people are actually willing to live by their principles even when they don't stand to directly benefit from it. People like to see the characters they care about and the principles they believe in, in alignment. That's pretty much it. Not too complicated.
I'm not upset about hamas losing a war they started by killing toddlers. I am however upset for any civilians on either side (including those toddlers) getting caught up in this. I don't know which side is in the right, but it definitely isn't hamas.
